This question rolls through my brain as I pack for every trip. The obvious answer should be, “as many as I need.” However, I often find myself packing a lot of stuff I want to play with but will never have a reasonable chance to use. So here it goes – my effort to cut down on the number of cameras, lenses, and other gear I pack for a one-week trip. From my last post, you could see that I wasn’t thrilled with how my photos shot on Fuji Pro 400H looked. I loved that film, but now that it is discontinued, I’m using up the last bit of my stock. I am completely out of 35mm at this point, but I do have some boxes of 120. The test on those will come soon.I don’t freeze my film, but I do store it in a cool environment, so those who freeze may have better luck. As the prices of film cameras and film rise, the economy of digital cameras becomes more obvious. However, as a film shooter, it’s difficult to fall in love with a digital camera. I have repeatedly said that digital cameras tend to be rather clinical, showing every detail without much character. I have always owned and used a digital camera since 2007 and appreciate the advantages they offer, but never really loved using them once I got back into film. The United States National Parks System has over 400 parks, including places of great natural beauty and historic significance. Included in our magnificent parks system is the San Juan National Historic Site. The site includes what remains of the walls which surrounded the City of San Juan, and one of the original gates, La Puerta de San Juan. The site also includes the forts which protected the city from invaders, Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, and Fort San Juan de la Cruz. I rarely take time when traveling to test films side by side, especially when I’m in the Caribbean. I am shooting for pleasure, and I’m there to relax, so I am not likely to take the time to shoot the same subject in two films to compare and contrast. On our January 2020 trip to Anguilla, I decided to walk the beach from end to end, about 1.5 miles in total. In August, we spent a week in London, England. It was our first trip, and we quickly discovered how much there is to see, and how little time there is in a week. We visited the State Rooms and the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum, the Harry Potter / Warner Bros.
