The day job took me to southern California in February. On my way to my conference, I stopped at Zuma Beach, located in Malibu. Sadly, all the lifeguard shacks were on shore, so I couldn’t get the classic shot I took when I visited Santa Monica a few years back, but the beach was quite beautiful. Few people could be found, and I suspect the only people enjoying the beach that day were those of us from the colder parts north. We celebrated the Fourth of July with family in Buffalo, Minnesota, complete with a visit to a neighboring dairy farm. The road took us to Minnesota for the 4th of July, and we stopped for a great breakfast at Victor’s 1959 Cafe in Minneapolis. I had a hearing in Jackson County, Wisconsin, the county seat of which is Black River Falls. Stepping out of the car in front of the courthouse, St. Joseph’s at the top of the hill immediately captures your attention. In a short walk, you can see the Jackson County Historical Society Museum, the church, the courthouse, and the river. On your way out of town, don’t miss the famous orange moose, the giant mouse devouring his Wisconsin cheese, and the oversized whitetail deer at the Black River Falls Oasis along the Highway 54 exit from the interstate. On the way home from Detroit, we made a brief stop for lunch at Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As it was graduation day, it was a bit busier than expected, but I had the best corned beef and pastrami sandwich I can ever remember. The road took us to Lexington, Kentucky for the Spring Meet at Keeneland, featuring the Maker’s 46 Mile. The Maker’s 46 Mile is a one-mile race for four year-olds up on turf, and was held on April 13, 2018. Keeneland is known for great horses. The 2018 Triple Crown winner, Justify, sold at Keeneland’s 2016 September Yearling Sale for $500,000. Justify was the 22nd Kentucky Derby winner, the 24th Preakness winner, and the 20th Belmont Stakes winner sold at Keeneland.
