From my last post, you could see that I wasn’t thrilled with how my photos shot on Fuji Pro 400H looked. I loved that film, but now that it is discontinued, I’m using up the last bit of my stock. I am completely out of 35mm at this point, but I do have some boxes of 120. The test on those will come soon.I don’t freeze my film, but I do store it in a cool environment, so those who freeze may have better luck. Although I wasn’t happy with the Santa Barbara shots, the true difference was seen when I was shooting the Goleta Lemon Festival in Goleta, California,…

I have been a hybrid shooter since returning to film in 2014. I have never abandoned digital because digital offers some distinct advantages over film in several respects. First, digital is more convenient. The storage devices are smaller and easier to transport than film. It’s quicker to turn around the results of your shoot, even if you develop and scan your own film. Digital is more economical, particularly after the initial investment in your equipment. Finally, digital is better at handling low light situations. I was willing to compromise convenience, but in my mind, film simply did not compare to digital photography at night. However, I wasn’t going to abandon…

I’m a firm believer in printing your photographs, and it’s really satisfying to create a zine of your images to tell the story of your travels. Here is the flip book of our latest zine, Farewell Fuji 400H: Miami to Key West. Enjoy!

A combination of winter plus COVID isolation got to me in early January, and I decided it was time to plan a trip. This year’s vacation would be different. It would be in the United States given that the restrictions on foreign travel added too many obstacles to an already burdensome process. I also had a certificate for two nights at The Confidante, Miami Beach, Florida, which I won with my gold medal in the North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) competition last year. So we decided to tick an item off the bucket list and drive from Miami to Key West. I booked the tickets to Miami, booked the…

I rarely take time when traveling to test films side by side, especially when I’m in the Caribbean. I am shooting for pleasure, and I’m there to relax, so I am not likely to take the time to shoot the same subject in two films to compare and contrast. On our January 2020 trip to Anguilla, I decided to walk the beach from end to end, about 1.5 miles in total. It just happened that I was at a particularly picturesque location when I ended a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 and popped in a roll of Fuji Velvia RVP 100. So I had a chance to compare how each…

This year, I participated in the Second Annual Negative Positives Double Exposure Challenge. The contest pairs up two listeners of the Negative Positives Film Photography Podcast, and each shoots the same roll of 35mm film. This year, I was paired with Marc Schoolderman, a photographer from Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, and we collaborated to create double exposures featuring scenes from our two cities. Partners then submit their two favorite images, which are judged by the two hosts of the podcast, Mike Gutterman and Andre Dominguez. Marc and I decided to shoot a roll of Fuji Pro 400H. He shot a Pentax MX, and I shot my Canon…
