Over Labor Day weekend, we traveled to San Francisco, California. We stayed in Tiburon, which is a great launching point to the city and to wine country to the north. When in the city, we had dim sum in Chinatown, explored the streets and alleys of Chinatown, grilled our own at a Korean BBQ, saw great works of modern art at SF MOMA, and hiked the trail at Lands End Lookout, a National Recreation Area at the western edge of the city. I shot four cameras over the 5-day trip, Mamiya 6, Mamiya 645 Pro TL, Canon 1v, and Canon AE-1 Program. Film stocks used include Kodak Portra 400 and 800,…

Our trip to San Francisco began in Tiburon, where we stayed at the Waters Edge Hotel. Located right on the water, the hotel is right next door to Sam’s Anchor Cafe, a popular spot to enjoy a drink and the views of the city. I found myself up early and made my way to the hotel deck, to watch the sun rise and light up the boats at the dock. Tiburon is a great small town with the perfect location for accessing the city or heading north to wine country. I brought four cameras on the trip and shot all of them in Tiburon: Mamiya 6, Mamiya 645 Pro TL,…

For today’s Film Flashback, we go back to 2002 and travel to Mexico to visit the Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the Yucatan Peninsula, the ruins are an easy day trip from Cancun. Although the most famous site on the grounds is El Castillo, the great pyramid temple of Kukulkan, the grounds consists of multiple structures, including the famous ball court, and two cenotes, Cenote Sagrada de Chichén Itzá and Cenote X’toloc. I was armed with my Canon EOS Elan II and a backpack leaving me free to climb, more accurately crawl, up the pyramid. The climb up, although steep, was not much of…

Photographers tend to collect camera bags. It’s not all desire. We buy more gear and reorganize our kits, and continue to look for the perfect bag to meet our needs. Some bags find the back of the closet quickly, and some are designed so beautifully, they continue to meet our needs until things are falling off. One bag, which I have owned for ten years, continues to wear well and regularly proves that it was well worth the money spent, the Billingham Hadley. I purchased this bag ten years ago. It was probably my third or fourth camera bag since really getting into photography, and the others not only moved…

I had a hearing in Jackson County, Wisconsin, the county seat of which is Black River Falls. Stepping out of the car in front of the courthouse, St. Joseph’s at the top of the hill immediately captures your attention. In a short walk, you can see the Jackson County Historical Society Museum, the church, the courthouse, and the river. On your way out of town, don’t miss the famous orange moose, the giant mouse devouring his Wisconsin cheese, and the oversized whitetail deer at the Black River Falls Oasis along the Highway 54 exit from the interstate. Mamiya 645 Pro TL with Mamiya 80mm f/1.9, Kodak Portra 400 and Kodak…
